The Doctors Agency of Michigan

The Doctors Agency of Michigan is a captive insurance agency of The Doctors Company, specializing in the medical professional liability insurance needs of Michigan physicians. The President of the agency, Michael “Mike” Tungate, is dedicated to providing customized advice and to meeting the specific insurance needs of each physician. He is committed to excellent service and working directly with physician clients and groups to ensure appropriate insurance coverage.

Based upon an extensive medical malpractice claims background, he has a keen understanding of the litigation process; is sensitive to the emotional impact of litigation on the physician and understands the importance of maintaining the physician’s professional reputation. He has worked closely with physicians and defense attorneys in conducting investigations, interviewing physicians and experts, and attending trials, mediations, and settlement conferences.

Prior to starting his agency, Mike acquired twenty-three years of experience in medical malpractice claims with American Physician Assurance Corporation, now known as The Doctors Company. The Doctors Company, owned by the physician policyholder members, is now the leading physician insurer in Michigan.

Mike received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Central Michigan University, with a major in Finance. He holds several insurance designations including the prestigious Charter Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU). He is a licensed Michigan agent in Property and Casualty, as well as Excess and Surplus lines and licensed as a Michigan insurance adjuster.

Mike began his career in insurance with Transamerica Insurance Company in 1979. In 1983, he was hired as a medical malpractice Claims Representative by Michigan Physicians (later known as The Doctors Company). As a manager, during his last sixteen years in claims, he held positions of Supervisor, Manager, and Regional Manager; with responsibility for managing claims operations in Michigan, Florida, and New Mexico.

He is available for on-site individual review and discussion of medical malpractice needs. He will assist with inquiries regarding insurance policies and provisions that include: definition of a claim, insurance agreement, policy exclusions, consent to settle, and policy conditions. He will evaluate physician needs and will coordinate with underwriting to provide a meaningful analysis of claims history, to obtain the most favorable insurance coverage and premium rate for customers.
